The Garden at 485 Elm
People growing together:
a collaborative community garden in Montpelier, Vermont

Gleaning and Feeding Friends & Neighbors

The garden donates food every season. This year, the donation program has been more important than ever.

Beans and greens are abundant now.
Volunteers from Community Harvest of Central Vermont harvest bush beans.
This wall of beautiful bush beans engulfs a volunteer!
After the gleaning, the food is weighed, documented, and delivered to organizations feeding Central Vermonters in need of fresh, healthy, delicious food. This day, volunteers gleaned 12 pounds of kale and chard and 15 pounds of beans. The inedible beans and less appealing greens were cleaned off the plants making room for new growth. Gleaning helps plants be healthier and more productive and leaves plenty of food behind.
Meanwhile, 485 Elm gardeners come on in to harvest dinner.
