Digging Flowers to Grow More Flowers
The garden’s Flower Ladies strategize what to dig up to make room for planting annuals.
Before long, the group was digging away, carefully unearthing what had been spreading in the flower beds.
Gardeners were invited to take home profusions of Shasta daisies, forget-me-nots, Johnny jump-ups, and perhaps some mystery plants that will reveal themselves when they bud and bloom.
Speaking of flowers, one place we
don’t
want to see them is in the Asian greens, mustard greens, arugula, and mesclun beds. It’s time for gardeners to bring scissors and bags and give these plants a haircut. They’ll go home with delicious greens, most still tender and tasty even with flowers.
Headier greens—that is, lettuces—are starting to look crowded too. The way we harvest those is to gently pinch off the outer leaves of each plant, leaving a healthy center crown of 6 to 8 leaves, which will continue growing for us to enjoy.
