Earlier in the gardening season, building infrastructure overlapped with planting and harvesting. On this rainy day late in the gardening season, breaking down and putting-to-bed co-occurs with harvesting and replanting.
The insects are waning and larger creatures who can get through the fence will find little to interest them. The sunflowers and corn came down yesterday.
There is still much to be done — and much to eat. We gardeners are still harvesting kale, collards, chard of many colors, spinach, bush beans, hot peppers, carrots, ground cherries, and broccoli. There’s even some lettuce and a few tiny red tomatoes. The Brussels sprouts are awaiting the season’s first hard frost for greatest deliciousness.
