Garlic Harvest
Masked gardeners gather at least six feet from each other to prepare for today’s garlic harvest.
Pulling garlic from the earth was quick and easy. After that, gardeners separated it by variety.
We grew jell-strain, porcelain, and Moreno hillside garlic. Our elephant garlic (actually a type of leek) didn’t do so well. We’re saving all the e. garlic we harvested as seed to plant this fall for elephant garlic shares next season.
We withheld about a quarter of the crop—the very healthiest heads—to dry for seed, which we’ll plant after frost. That will grow into our crop for 2021.
The remaining 75 percent was distributed into shares, one for each household in the garden. Each gardener takes home a generous mix of all the varieties we grew.
Even sunglasses and a mask can’t hide this gardener’s smile. Mmm, garlic!
Gardeners went home with onions today too. We have a huge onion bed that isn’t ready to be harvested. An extra onion row we planted in another bed ripened quickly. So we each got a small preview share of fresh, juicy, delicious red, white, and yellow onions and a few shallots.
