A beautiful day beckoned gardeners for the first big garden work party of the season. We dug potato trenches (and found some garlic & carrot treasures), planted flowers, prepped beds for onions and squash, turned the compost between bins, and said hi to the worms and bees, all in the beautiful Vermont sunshine.
Loosening and turning soil is something we do gently here. 
We don’t want to disrupt anyone’s home.

This season’s potato bed was last season’s garlic bed, and treasures were unearthed. That glorious carrot emerged during weeding what will be the winter squash bed.
The compost has thawed. It was time to turn it from bin 2 to bin three, then from bin 1 (the tumbler) from bin 2. 
This used to be food and some paper goods. By next season, it will be nutrient-rich soil for plants to grow in.
Flower Power team weeded the three rows where cutting flowers will grow. 
Newly planted sweet pea seedlings that were started indoors are covered with row fabric for the cold nights to come. When it warms up, the garden fabric will be removed and the sweet peas will climb the trellis (background).
