Gardeners Share: Why Join a Community Garden

By Nancy MacDonald

My favorite day at The Garden at 485 Elm so far was the day we harvested garlic last July. It was raining cats and dogs, and all of us were drenched to the bone. Yet there was something delightful about watching our merry band of gardeners work together to get the job done.

When I joined the garden in the spring of 2025, I thought it would be a great way to meet people, grow yummy vegetables, and get some exercise. With limited gardening experience, I knew working alongside others in a shared garden plot would help me learn from more seasoned gardeners.

After one full season at The Garden at 485 Elm, I’ve learned that community gardening grows more than vegetables and flowers. It cultivates friendships, shared laughter, stronger muscles, and a sense of belonging.

Nancy’s garden garlic adds beauty and deliciousness to her home.
