Hot weather means it’s Solanaceae time! Gardeners planted cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, ground cherries, tomatillos, chili peppers, basil, rosemary, parsley, and brussels sprouts.

Gardeners plant tomatillo seedlings grown at Red Wagon Plants and purchased from Guy’s Farm & Yard Montpelier. Tomatillos are neither annuals nor perennials. They’re self-seeders, and we front-load the crop with seedlings that are way ahead of the tiny seeds we scatter from previous seasons’ crops.

Watering in the just-planted chili peppers, cherry tomatoes, and basil seedlings from Cate Farm and a neighbor who grows them on Cummings Street.

Pole beans are covered against pests that chomp them. Marigolds and calendula are growing here too, and very soon, gardeners will plant winter squash seed in this bed. Volunteer potatoes from earlier seasons thrive nearby; we’ll harvest them young, and when the plants flower, to make room for squash. In the background, at right, a gardener tends newly planted cucumber seedlings.

Watering in baby brussels sprouts seedlings against a background of luscious garlic. At right, recently transplanted flower seedlings enjoy the heat.

The garden loves volunteers, and volunteers love the garden.
